Secret Number
Secret Number (adaptable for different grade levels)
Skill:
number line sense
memory
greater than/less than
Materials: none
Prep: none
To Play: Choose a secret number.
(K-1 Between 0 and 20)
(Gr. 2 Between 0 and 100)
(Gr. 3-4 Between 0 and 1000)
The players take turns guessing the number. The leader then tells them if the secret number is higher or lower than their guess. This continues until the secret number is found. The secret to playing this game is to hold onto the numbers in your head. Children start to figure out that you only need to hold on to the highest number that is too small, and the lowest number that is too big, but don't tell them that. Let them figure it out for themselves. The second secret is to use the half-way strategy. If you guess a number that is halfway in between, you are eliminating half the numbers. Don't tell them that one either. They will catch on to that as well.
